NAF Praised for Crucial Role in Curbing Illegal Arms Proliferation, Says NCCSALW Coordinator

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received commendation for its unwavering dedication and efforts in tackling the inflow and proliferation of small arms and light weapons within the nation. Major General Abba Dikko (Rtd), the National Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), expressed this appreciation during a recent visit to NAF Headquarters, where he met with the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar.

General Dikko praised NAF’s consistent support, especially in the transportation, storage, and security of confiscated weapons. These contributions have significantly lightened the workload for the Centre. He emphasized, “The NAF’s commitment and diligence in assisting the Centre in ridding the nation of small arms and light weapons through airlifts, robust collaboration, mutual synergy, and proactive intelligence gathering are unparalleled and merit our sincere appreciation.”

Furthermore, Major General Dikko (Rtd) sought the CAS’s support in advocating for the passage of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill 2023, currently under consideration in the Senate of the National Assembly.

Air Marshal Abubakar, in response, underscored the productive working relationship between NAF and the Centre since its establishment in May 2021. He highlighted the timeliness of the Centre’s creation, considering the direct correlation between the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and heightened insecurity.

The CAS expressed his satisfaction with the Centre’s efforts in curbing the illegal spread and circulation of arms and other weapons within Nigeria. He stated, “Any initiative aimed at controlling the proliferation of small arms and light weapons is undoubtedly a positive step towards a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria.”

Additionally, Air Marshal Abubakar commended the Coordinator for establishing a database that distinguishes legitimate from illegitimate arms in the country.

This database will greatly assist security agencies and the Federal Government in making informed decisions regarding weapons and ammunition management.

The CAS reassured the Coordinator of NAF’s unwavering support as the Centre continues to pursue its mandate.
